Kenya and Finland Sign 3 Pacts on Climate and Education

Kenya and Finland signed three major cooperation agreements this week that will bring new opportunities in education, technology, and climate action to both nations.

President William Ruto and Finnish President Alexander Stubb witnessed the signing ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki on Wednesday. The agreements cover technical education and teacher training, digital public services and innovation, and climate resilience and green growth.

"These agreements reflect the growing depth and practical orientation of relations between Kenya and Finland," President Ruto said during the ceremony. The deals will expand vocational training programs, support digital transformation of government services, and strengthen environmental sustainability efforts in both countries.

The visit marks the second exchange between the two leaders this year. President Stubb made history in May 2025 as the first Finnish president to visit Kenya, highlighting Finland's interest in partnering with East Africa's largest economy.

"I see great potential in partnering with Kenya, the gateway to East Africa," President Stubb said. Finland's expertise in education and technology pairs well with Kenya's position as a regional innovation hub and voice for African interests globally.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond the bilateral agreements, both presidents used the visit to push for broader reforms. They called for Africa to gain permanent representation on the UN Security Council, a position that would give the continent's 1.4 billion people a stronger voice in global decisions.

"We want Africa to participate in writing the rules of the new world order," President Ruto explained at a UN dialogue in Helsinki. President Stubb echoed the call, saying the world needs "a new San Francisco moment" with the Global South at its center.

The partnership shows how countries can work together across continents on shared challenges. Finland brings technical know-how in areas like clean energy and digital government, while Kenya offers regional connections and insights on climate adaptation in vulnerable regions.

President Ruto also used the visit to reassure international partners about Kenya's health preparedness, noting that over 100,000 visitors have been tested for Ebola with no cases detected. The education, climate, and technology agreements will now move into implementation phases, with both governments committed to fast-tracking results that benefit their citizens.
