Kenya's Stima Sacco Connects 25 Digital Services for Members
One of Kenya's pioneering financial cooperatives just made banking faster and safer for thousands of members by replacing slow systems with modern digital connections. Stima Sacco now links members to mobile money, international transfers, and insurance through one secure platform.
Stima DT Sacco Society Limited is proving that Kenya's cooperative movement can compete in the digital age.
The financial cooperative, which holds the distinction of being Kenya's first licensed Sacco, just completed a major technology upgrade that connects more than 25 digital services through one streamlined system. Members can now access everything from mobile money transfers to diaspora remittances without the frustrating delays that plagued older systems.
Before the upgrade, Stima Sacco relied on traditional point-to-point connections that became slower and more complicated as the organization grew. Adding new banking partners or digital services required building separate connections each time, creating a tangled web of systems that was difficult to manage securely.
The cooperative partnered with WSO2 to build a modern integration platform that acts like a digital hub. Instead of maintaining dozens of separate connections, Stima Sacco now channels all its services through one secure gateway that links its core banking systems with over 15 external providers.
"We are able to scale up our applications, reuse code, and bring more solutions to market," said Samuel Kahura Wacira, ICT Manager at Stima Sacco. The change means new services that once took months to launch can now go live in weeks.

Members are already benefiting from the improved system. ATM transactions process faster, cheque clearing happens more smoothly, and members living abroad can send money home through streamlined diaspora banking channels.
The Ripple Effect
This modernization matters beyond Stima Sacco's membership base. As one of Kenya's leading deposit-taking cooperatives, the organization serves as a model for hundreds of smaller Saccos across East Africa that provide financial services to millions of people who might otherwise lack banking access.
By proving that cooperatives can adopt cutting-edge technology without compromising security, Stima Sacco is showing a path forward for the entire sector. The platform's ability to rapidly onboard new partners means the cooperative can respond quickly as Kenya's fintech ecosystem expands.
The organization isn't stopping here. Plans are already underway to add artificial intelligence capabilities that will help monitor system performance and catch potential problems before members notice them.
For Kenya's cooperative banking sector, this digital leap shows that member-owned institutions can deliver the same seamless experiences that big banks offer.
