Kerala's Ernakulam Closes All Flood Relief Camps

Families displaced by flooding in Kerala's Ernakulam district are heading home this week as the last relief camp closed its doors on Friday. After days of heavy downpour that forced hundreds into emergency shelters, improved weather brought welcome relief to the entire region.

The district operated multiple relief camps across three areas during the worst of the flooding. The Neerpara camp in Kothamangalam was the final facility to close on Friday, following the shutdown of four other camps in the same area on Thursday.

All five camps in Muvattupuzha and three in Kunnathunad had already closed by Thursday as conditions improved. The eastern parts of the district, including tribal communities near the Pooyamkutty river, received only light rain on Friday.

The India Meteorological Department tracked the improvement in real time. Officials downgraded their red alert to orange and then to yellow as the weather stabilized, signaling the worst had passed.

Water levels in the Muvattupuzha river, which had climbed above warning levels, dropped back to safer levels. Communities along the riverbanks watched anxiously as the waters receded, bringing visible relief to neighborhoods that had braced for potential evacuations.

While the Thodupuzha and Kaliyar rivers continued rising, both remained below warning levels. District officials maintained their monitoring systems and kept emergency preparations ready, demonstrating how proper planning helps communities weather natural challenges safely.
