Kevin Sinfield Knighted for Raising £11M for MND Families

🦸 Hero Alert

Rugby legend Kevin Sinfield has been knighted for raising over £11 million to support families affected by Motor Neurone Disease, inspired by his late friend Rob Burrow. Six England footballers from the Euro 2025-winning squad have also been honored as MBEs.

A rugby league champion who turned his grief into action just received one of Britain's highest honors for helping thousands of families facing a devastating disease.

Kevin Sinfield, 45, has been knighted in the King's Birthday Honours for raising more than £11 million for Motor Neurone Disease research and family support. The former Leeds Rhinos captain became just the second rugby league figure ever to receive a knighthood.

His mission started with love for a friend. Sinfield was inspired by former teammate Rob Burrow, who battled MND for five years before dying in 2024 at age 41. Together, they led seven Super League championship victories and built a friendship that would spark a movement.

"My playing career was everything I could ever have dreamed of as a young man, but the last seven years have given me so much inspiration," Sinfield said. "The MND community are the very best of us and it has been my privilege to support them."

Just four days before the announcement, Sinfield revealed his seventh and final annual challenge to raise money for MND charities. His first challenge began in December 2020, and the tradition has grown into a nationwide phenomenon of hope.

Rob's widow Lindsey Burrow shared her joy at the news. "Kevin did so much for Rob but also the whole MND community," she said. "As Rob used to say, everyone should have a friend like Kevin."

Why This Inspires

Sinfield's story shows how personal loss can transform into powerful change. He took the hardest moment of his life and turned it into a lifeline for thousands of families navigating the same heartbreak. His dedication proves that friendship doesn't end with goodbye, and that one person's commitment can create waves of hope across an entire community.

The honors list also celebrated sporting excellence across the board. Six England footballers from the Euro 2025-winning team received MBEs: Michelle Agyemang, Jess Carter, Hannah Hampton, Lauren James, Chloe Kelly, and Alessia Russo.

Former Scotland footballer Lou Macari earned an MBE for his dual legacy in football and supporting homeless people in Stoke-on-Trent. Meanwhile, rugby union star Emily Scarratt became an OBE after retiring following her second Women's Rugby World Cup victory.

Gary Street, who coached England's women's rugby team to World Cup glory in 2014, also received an MBE despite suffering a stroke last year. His wife Helen said rugby has given so much to their family throughout their journey.

Sinfield now serves as England rugby union's defense coach, but his greatest coaching happens off the field, where he's teaching us all what true friendship looks like in action.
