Kia's New Electric Sedan Undercuts Tesla in Australia

Kia just made electric cars more affordable for Australian drivers with its brand new EV4 sedan, priced thousands below Tesla's popular Model 3.

The 2026 Kia EV4 hits Australian showrooms this month starting at $49,990 AUD (about $33,500 USD), beating the Tesla Model 3's $54,900 price tag. First deliveries begin by the end of January.

The entry-level Air model comes with a 58.3 kWh battery offering 283 miles of range. For buyers wanting more distance per charge, the upgraded Earth and GT-Line versions pack an 81.4 kWh battery that delivers 380 miles of range.

Kia designed the EV4 to charge fast, reaching 10% to 80% battery in just 29 to 31 minutes at DC fast charging stations. The interior features nearly 30 inches of combined screen space across three displays, including dual 12.3-inch screens and a dedicated climate control panel.

The mid-tier Earth trim adds vehicle-to-load capabilities, letting drivers power camping equipment or external electronics directly from their car. It also includes 19-inch wheels and heated front seats for just $1,200 more than the base model.

The top GT-Line version at $64,690 brings sporty styling, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, and a head-up display for drivers who want extra features.

The Ripple Effect

Kia's electric vehicles are already winning over Australian buyers. The EV5 ranked as the fourth most popular EV in Australia last year, while the EV3 claimed tenth place.

This growing competition benefits everyone shopping for electric cars. Chinese automaker BYD's Seal still holds the lowest price at $46,990, creating a competitive market that pushes all brands to offer better value.

The shift to affordable electric vehicles gives more Australians access to cleaner transportation without breaking the bank. As prices drop and options expand, the transition away from gas-powered cars becomes realistic for everyday families.

Unfortunately for American buyers, Kia postponed US launch plans indefinitely due to recent policy changes. For now, Australians, Europeans, and South Koreans get first access to this wallet-friendly electric option.
