Kimi Antonelli Wins Italian GP from 19th on Grid

Twenty-year-old Kimi Antonelli just rewrote Formula 1 history with a victory his team boss compared to walking on water.

Starting from 19th place on the grid at Monza's Italian Grand Prix, Antonelli carved through the field with breathtaking precision to win his home race. The victory marks only the second time in F1 history that a driver has come from so far back to stand on the top step of the podium.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff saw it coming. "I thought one of the two is going to win," he said after the race, referring to Antonelli and teammate George Russell, who started on the front row.

"Either George, because he was on the front row, or Kimi because he's going to walk over water, here at Monza," Wolff explained. The confidence came from watching Antonelli's energy and mindset throughout the weekend.

Antonelli moved from 19th to 14th on the first lap, then to 12th when a red flag paused the race. "With the red flag, I was already P12, and then I knew that I could have a shot at it," he said.

After the restart, something magical happened. Antonelli passed car after car with surgical precision, climbing to eighth place in a single lap.

By lap 13, he was third and closing fast on the leaders. Three laps later, he and Russell were running one-two at the front.

A strategic pit stop during a virtual safety car gave Russell a temporary advantage. Antonelli rejoined 14 seconds behind with 24 laps remaining and four cars between them.

He caught Russell with five laps to go. After a brief moment when he slid into the gravel trying to pass, Antonelli swept past his teammate on the straight and drove to victory.

The crowd at Monza erupted. For the first time since 1965, an Italian driver had won the Italian Grand Prix.

Antonelli's victory shows what's possible when talent meets determination and belief. His team boss and father both sensed something special brewing before the race even started.

Wolff compared Antonelli's ability to navigate traffic to legends like Lewis Hamilton. "When a driver and a car are one, then there's nothing that can stop them," he said.

Russell, despite finishing second, acknowledged the brilliance he'd witnessed. "As soon as I saw Kimi up to P5 after a handful of laps, I knew he was going to be in the fight with us."

Most drivers would have aimed for fifth or sixth from 19th place. Antonelli himself thought a podium was possible before the race.

Instead, he delivered a performance that will be replayed for decades, proving that starting position doesn't determine where you'll finish.
