Kiwi Skater Lands Dream Job on World's Biggest Ship

Danielle Gebser was settling into her first marketing job when an email changed everything.

The 23-year-old from Auckland had applied months earlier to perform on Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship. After hearing nothing back, she'd accepted that her skating days were behind her and started building her marketing career.

Then the yes arrived. Within weeks, she was rehearsing in Los Angeles for Fusion, a brand new ice skating spectacular.

Gebser, an Oceania International figure skating champion, had topped her marketing course at AUT. The sensible choice was clear. But when her mom Sam told her to go for it, she took the leap.

Now she performs twice daily on the largest ice rink ever built at sea. The show blends drama and humor as skaters interpret how elements like fire, water, air and earth fuse together.

Skating while the ship moves through ocean swells takes adjustment. Gebser has learned to anticipate the rock and shift her body position mid-performance. Despite the challenge, she calls it the time of her life.

The ship stretches as long as three and a half rugby fields. More than 2,100 crew members live aboard, with their own themed dining spaces, bars and gym. Between shows and rehearsals, Gebser explores Mediterranean ports before the ship heads to the Caribbean for winter.
