Korean Phrase for Hard Days Brings the World to Tears

When Korean actor Hana Kim shared her mother's nightly text ritual on Instagram, she had no idea millions would soon be crying in their cars, at their desks, and in their beds.

The phrase her mom sends every night is 수고했어, pronounced "soo-goh-het-suh." It translates to something far more powerful than "good job."

"It means you've carried your pain, but you still kept going," Kim explains in the video. Her mother doesn't send it because Kim succeeded at something or achieved a goal.

She sends it simply because Kim made it through another day.

Kim breaks down when to use it with her followers. "If today felt long, soo-goh-het-suh. If no one noticed how hard you worked today, soo-goh-het-suh. If you wanted to give up everything but you said 'just one more time,' soo-goh-het-suh."

The video struck a nerve because it names something most people feel but rarely hear acknowledged. Sometimes the win isn't crossing the finish line. Sometimes it's just lacing up your shoes.
