Lab Staff's 945 Years Keep Science Discoveries Flowing

Behind every Nobel Prize and breakthrough discovery at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory stands an army of dedicated people you'll never read about in scientific journals.

At this year's Long-Term Employee Dinner, the renowned New York research institute honored 35 staff members representing 945 combined years of service. These aren't just the scientists in white coats. They're the line cooks preparing thousands of meals, the logistics specialists ordering supplies, and the technicians keeping labs running smoothly.

President Bruce Stillman personally thanked each honoree, sharing stories from their decades at CSHL. "Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a wonderful and exciting research and education institute in which to work," he said, "and we are very thankful to those long-term employees who dedicate their lives to supporting this endeavor."

The recognition spans employees celebrating 20 years of service and every five-year milestone after that. Some honorees have spent over 40 years at the bench advancing science, while others have ensured researchers never miss a meal or run out of crucial supplies.

Maria Villatoro, a Senior Logistics Specialist who joined in 2005, captured what keeps people at CSHL for decades. "CSHL has always been a special place in my life, not only to work, but also as a second family," she said. "It promotes opportunities, stability, and inclusivity."

The Ripple Effect

When visitors tour CSHL, they see cutting-edge facilities and hear about groundbreaking discoveries that change medicine and save lives. What they don't always see is the cafeteria worker who's been fueling those breakthroughs for 25 years or the facilities team maintaining equipment that makes experiments possible.

Villatoro pointed to something deeper that keeps the team together. "I enjoy working at the Lab because it is nice to share with people from different backgrounds," she explained. "The diversity CSHL provides is unique and a great representation of the American dream."

Every scientific breakthrough requires an entire ecosystem of support, and CSHL's nearly millennium of combined employee experience proves that world-changing research happens when organizations value every role equally.
