Lagos Empowers 3,792 Residents with Business Tools

Nearly 4,000 people in Lagos, Nigeria walked away from a graduation ceremony with more than certificates. They left with the tools, equipment, and financial support to start their own businesses and change their families' futures.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented working materials to 3,792 beneficiaries of the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI) this week. The program bridges the gap between learning a skill and actually launching a business by providing everything graduates need to get started.

The initiative offers free vocational training at state-run Skills Acquisition Centres, then follows up with actual business equipment. Since the program launched seven years ago, more than 35,000 residents have completed the training courses completely free of charge.

The impact goes beyond individual success stories. Another 18,990 people have already received their business start-up packages before this latest graduation, creating a wave of new small businesses across the city.

"This programme is more than the distribution of tools and equipment," Sanwo-Olu explained at the ceremony. "It is the fulfilment of our promise to give our people the means to create wealth, build sustainable businesses, generate employment and achieve financial independence."

The recipients come from urban neighborhoods, rural areas, and even riverine communities throughout Lagos State. Each person completed vocational training in their chosen field before receiving customized equipment matched to their specific business plans.

The Ripple Effect

When nearly 19,000 people start small businesses, the benefits multiply quickly. Each new entrepreneur creates jobs for family members and neighbors while contributing to local economies across Lagos State.

The program deliberately focuses on turning dependency into self-reliance. Instead of temporary aid, participants receive the skills and tools to generate their own income for years to come.

Commissioner Bolaji Cecilia Dada emphasized that the ministry designs every intervention with long-term transformation in mind. The goal extends beyond poverty relief to actual wealth creation and sustained economic empowerment.

The initiative also prioritizes gender equality and social inclusion, ensuring women and marginalized communities have equal access to business opportunities. This approach tackles poverty while building a more equitable economic landscape across the state.

Today's 3,792 new business owners represent renewed hope for thousands of families who now have a real path forward.
