Chart showing top 10 Nigerian startup cities with Lagos leading the rankings

Lagos Jumps to 70th in Global Startup Rankings

🤯 Mind Blown

Nigeria's tech capital Lagos has climbed into the top 70 global startup cities, growing 23% in just one year. The surge positions Africa as home to three of the world's fastest-growing startup regions.

Lagos just cracked the top 70 cities worldwide for startup ecosystems, a powerful sign that African innovation is accelerating on the global stage.

Nigeria's commercial hub now ranks 70th globally according to the 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Index, jumping up with 23% growth. The city hosts 987 startups, nearly two-thirds of all Nigerian tech companies, and continues to dominate Africa's most populous nation.

But the story gets even better beyond Lagos. Smaller Nigerian cities are catching fire with even faster growth rates.

Port Harcourt posted an impressive 82% growth rate, the fastest among Nigerian cities. Enugu, a southeastern city once known for coal mining, surged 40% to break into the global top 1000 for the first time.

"Enugu is implementing a deliberate, capital-ready innovation ecosystem," explains Ainze Chilo-Offiah, the governor's Special Adviser on digital economy. The city aims to grow its regional economy to $200 billion by 2035 through programs like the Enugu Campus Hackathon that discover and train promising founders.

Nigeria as a whole jumped four spots to 62nd globally, recording 32% growth that nearly doubles the global average of 17.5%. The country now ranks first in Africa for fintech innovation, placing 13th worldwide in online banking and 17th in cryptocurrency.

The fintech success makes sense when you consider the companies thriving there: Moniepoint, Opay, Flutterwave, and Paystack have all built global reputations. Clear regulations from Nigeria's Startup Act have given founders the confidence to build.

The Ripple Effect

Nigeria's rise reflects something bigger happening across Africa. Three of the world's fastest-growing startup regions are on the continent: Central, Western, and Southern Africa.

South Africa still leads Africa at 52nd globally, with Kenya in second at 61st. But Nigeria's faster growth rate suggests the gap could narrow in coming years.

Angola and Algeria posted the fastest growth rates on the continent, while Cape Verde and Tunisia both grew above 30%. Cape Town surged 24 places to 114th, reclaiming its spot as South Africa's top startup city.

The ranking measures three key factors: how many startups exist, their quality and success, and whether the business environment supports growth. Nigeria scored highest in Africa for ecosystem value, meaning its startups generate significant financial impact.

Tony Elumelu's Heirs Holdings earned recognition as Nigeria's leading corporate supporter of startups, providing up to $5,000 in funding plus mentorship to innovators.

The momentum shows no signs of slowing as cities beyond Lagos prove they can compete globally too.
