Lagos Stage Play Honors Nigeria's Fearless Drug Safety Hero

A standing ovation filled a Lagos theater as actors brought to life the story of Professor Dora Akunyili, the woman who fearlessly took on Nigeria's deadly counterfeit drug crisis.

The Duke of Shomolu Foundation premiered "Dora" this past weekend, a stage play honoring the late Director-General of Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The production celebrates Akunyili's legacy of courage in protecting millions from dangerous fake medicines.

"Dora brings out the essence of womanhood," said Mofoluwake Edgar, Executive Director of the foundation. Her words captured what many in the audience felt watching the powerful performance unfold.

Akunyili became legendary for her uncompromising stance against counterfeit drugs during her time at NAFDAC. She faced threats and attacks but never backed down, transforming an agency once seen as ineffective into a force that saved countless lives across Nigeria.

Creating the play came with unique challenges. Playwright Mustapha Sule worked closely with Akunyili's family to ensure accuracy while handling sensitive moments with care. The family approved the final script after careful review.

One of Akunyili's sons, Obumneme, now Director-General of Anambra State's Project Monitoring Office, attended the premiere. He was moved to tears watching an actress embody his mother's tenacity and strength on stage.

"There is only one Dora per generation," Obumneme said. "She's like Nnamdi Azikiwe or Herbert Macaulay. These are special people who come once and change everything around them."

Why This Inspires

The play arrives at a crucial moment. Edgar notes that fake drugs, food, and drinks remain widespread problems in Nigeria today. The country needs more fearless leaders willing to stand up to powerful interests.

Edgar pointed to emerging women leaders in Nigeria's banking sector as hopeful signs. But she emphasized that women need support and opportunities to step into positions where they can make bold stands like Akunyili did.

"If we have five to ten women like Dora, Nigeria would be settled," Edgar declared. Her call resonated with the audience, many of them young women inspired by Akunyili's example.

The Duke of Shomolu Foundation produces historical plays about Nigerians who shaped their nation. Akunyili earned her place in this series because she lived without compromise, even when it cost her personally.

Obumneme shared a powerful reminder at the evening's close: "A person dies twice when they breathe their last and the last time somebody says their name." Through this theatrical tribute, Akunyili's name and legacy continue inspiring new generations to lead with courage and integrity.
