Lagos Students Get Free Contraceptives Delivered to Campus

Students at the University of Lagos just got a game-changing health resource delivered straight to their doorstep.

A new digital platform launched by the UN Population Fund, Lagos State government, and GoMed Nigeria now provides university students with free contraceptives and reproductive health products. The service delivers discreetly to campuses and student hostels, removing the barriers that have long prevented young people from getting care.

The timing couldn't be more critical. A 2025 study found that female students in Nigerian universities rarely use sexual and reproductive health services because of stigma, high costs, long wait times, and privacy concerns. These barriers have real consequences: unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, sexually transmitted infections, and students dropping out of school.

The platform solves these problems in one package. Students receive free contraceptives and health commodities from the Lagos State Ministry of Health and UNFPA. They can also buy other health products at a discount, all delivered privately to campus. Registered pharmacists provide confidential guidance through the app, and students can chat with qualified family planning providers for accurate information.

"Students should be able to get reliable health information and essential products without cost, distance or fear of judgement becoming barriers," said Anthony Edeki, CEO of GoMed Nigeria. The platform protects student privacy while connecting them with professional healthcare guidance they can trust.

The Ripple Effect

This initiative does more than help individual students make informed health choices. It's part of a bigger movement to reduce preventable maternal deaths and expand youth-friendly health services across Nigeria.

When young people can access reproductive healthcare without shame or financial stress, they stay in school longer and build healthier futures. The platform connects to UNFPA's SoftLife 247 and U-Plan information services, creating a complete support system that reaches students where they already are: on their phones.

Muriel Mafico, UNFPA's representative in Nigeria, sees this as a template for reaching more young people across the country. "Together, we want to empower Nigeria's next generation to make informed health choices and achieve stronger health outcomes and a brighter future," she said.

The University of Lagos launch is just the beginning, with plans to expand to more campuses and reach thousands more students who deserve access to quality healthcare.
