Lagos Traffic Officers Save Worker Hit by Runaway Truck

When a speeding truck with failed brakes crashed into Lagos sanitation worker Baba Ibeji, traffic officers stationed nearby didn't hesitate. They pulled him from beneath the mangled wreckage and rushed him to get the medical care that could save his life.

The accident happened along Offin Canal near Eko Bridge while Ibeji was doing his job collecting refuse. The heavily loaded container truck was barreling down CMS Bridge when its brakes failed, sending it careening out of control.

The truck hit Ibeji before smashing into a Toyota Camry. Officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority who were monitoring traffic in the area immediately sprang into action.

They extracted the seriously injured worker from under the truck and got him to nearby Fuja Hospital. When that hospital couldn't handle his severe injuries, the officers made sure he was transferred to General Hospital for specialized treatment.

Meanwhile, the truck driver fled the scene after the crash. But officers caught the truck assistant and handed him over to police at Ebute-Ero Police Division to help with the investigation.

The Bright Side

This story highlights how having trained responders in the right place at the right time makes all the difference. These traffic officers could have simply directed vehicles around the accident, but they chose to act as first responders.

Their quick thinking gave Ibeji a chance he wouldn't have had otherwise. In those critical minutes after a serious injury, every second counts.

Lagos transportation adviser Sola Giwa has called for a full investigation into the crash, with possible prosecution for the reckless driving that caused it. He condemned the dangerous conduct that put workers and drivers at risk.

The incident also shines a light on the daily dangers faced by sanitation workers who keep Lagos clean. They work alongside speeding traffic to serve their community, often without recognition.

Those traffic officers proved that being alert and ready to help can turn tragedy into hope.
