Lagos Widows Get Food Aid on International Women's Day
Thirty widows in Lagos's waterfront community of Makoko received food packages from IDA Beauty and Tabitha-Kay Widow Care Foundation on International Women's Day. The donation brought essential supplies to women facing housing insecurity after government evictions.
Thirty widows in Makoko, one of Lagos's most vulnerable waterfront communities, danced and celebrated as they received food packages to help feed their families this week.
The donation came from IDA Beauty in partnership with Tabitha-Kay Widow Care Foundation on International Women's Day. The women, mostly traders struggling to make ends meet, each received rice, cooking oil, spaghetti, salt, and tomato paste.
Makoko residents have faced severe challenges recently after forced evictions by the Lagos state government. The floating slum community has lost much of its housing, with women and children bearing the heaviest burden.
Mariya Wenu, a food seller, could barely contain her joy. "I'm happy. May God bless her. I have even prayed for her," she said after receiving her package.
Angelina Ajibade, who sells fish to support her family, urged the organizers to keep the community in mind. "They love us, and that is why they reach out to us," she explained.

Several widows expressed hope for something more. Margaret Andrew, another fish trader, thanked the donors but said she dreams of capital to start a soft drinks business and build a more stable income.
Sunny's Take
What makes this story shine isn't just the food packages. It's seeing community organizations step up when neighbors need help most.
Idowu Adepeju, founder of IDA Beauty, told the women she sees their silent strength. "We see the weight you carry. We see the courage it takes to rebuild when life changes unexpectedly," she said.
Her words reminded the widows that their stories didn't end with tragedy. Standing together in their waterfront community, these 30 women found reason to smile and dance, even amid hardship.
Dorcas Adelaja, cofounder of Tabitha-Kay Widow Care, called the initiative "thoughtful and great." Sometimes the greatest gift is simply being remembered.
