LaGuardia Opens Nation's Largest Airport EV Charging Hub
LaGuardia Airport just unveiled 12 high-speed electric vehicle chargers that can power up cars in just 30 minutes. The station is designed to serve over 100 rideshare drivers daily, making it easier than ever to go electric at one of America's busiest airports.
Getting stuck with a dying battery at the airport is about to become a problem of the past for electric vehicle drivers in New York.
LaGuardia Airport just opened the largest EV fast-charging station at any U.S. airport, featuring 12 high-speed chargers that can juice up compatible vehicles in as little as 30 minutes. The new station serves rideshare drivers, taxis, and travelers at one of the nation's busiest travel hubs.
The timing couldn't be better. More than 100,000 electric vehicles currently cruise through Long Island and New York City, and roughly 22 percent of all Uber and Lyft trips in the city are now zero-emission or wheelchair accessible. That number is only going up.
The charging hub sits on Runway Drive, easily accessible off the Grand Central Parkway's Exit 7. Drivers can pay with a credit card, mobile wallet, or app, making the experience as smooth as filling up at a traditional gas station.
These aren't your average chargers either. Each unit delivers up to 350 kilowatts of power, putting them among the fastest available. To keep things moving, the station limits charges to 85 percent and adds idle fees if drivers linger too long after their session ends.

The New York Power Authority installed and funded the entire project, bringing their statewide EVolve NY network to 300 total charging units. The station is expected to serve more than 100 drivers every single day.
The Ripple Effect
This charging hub does more than just power cars. It's a lifeline for the 13,100 licensed rideshare drivers in New York City who've already made the switch to electric.
These drivers work long shifts, often starting and ending at airports. Having reliable, fast charging where they actually work means less downtime, less range anxiety, and more confidence in going electric. It's the difference between wondering if you can make it through your shift and knowing you can.
The move also supports New York City's Green Rides Initiative, which requires all Uber and Lyft trips to use either zero-emission or wheelchair accessible vehicles by 2030. When the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission launched the initiative in 2023, they specifically asked for airport charging stations. Both LaGuardia and JFK now have them.
Beyond passenger vehicles, LaGuardia's sustainability push extends across airport operations. The facility now uses 1,400 electric ground service vehicles and 775 electric chargers for everything from baggage tractors to airplane tows.
The Port Authority has committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and they're backing it up with action. When infrastructure meets ambition, everyone wins.
