Lake County Wants You: Help Seniors Stay Independent

A simple phone call or delivered meal might not seem life-changing, but for isolated seniors in Lake County, Ohio, these small acts create powerful connections that help them stay independent at home.

The county is recruiting volunteers for three programs designed to support older adults: Phone Pal, Meals on Wheels, and Helping Hands for Seniors. Each program tackles a different challenge facing aging residents who want to remain in their homes.

Phone Pal volunteers make regular calls to older neighbors, offering conversation and social connection that breaks the cycle of isolation. Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver food while conducting informal wellness checks that ensure seniors are safe and healthy. Helping Hands for Seniors volunteers assist with light household chores and errands that might otherwise force someone to leave their home.

County officials say volunteers are essential to keeping these lifelines running. "A simple phone call, a delivered meal, or a helping hand can make a profound difference in someone's life," said Commission President Morris Beverage III.

The county makes volunteering accessible through the Lake County Volunteer Network, which matches people with opportunities that fit their schedules and interests. The program particularly welcomes volunteers age 55 and older who want to give back to their community.

Volunteers receive meaningful benefits beyond the satisfaction of helping neighbors. They can access supplemental medical insurance, free transportation through Laketran's Dial-a-Ride service, and invitations to social events that build community connections.

Right now, the county is offering new Meals on Wheels and Helping Hands volunteers a limited-time $50 gift card, funded through an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP grant. It's a small thank-you for stepping up to serve.
