Historic Cal Neva Resort on Lake Tahoe's shoreline during its 1960s Hollywood heyday

Lake Tahoe's Legendary Cal Neva Resort Returns in 2027

😊 Feel Good

The iconic Cal Neva Resort, where Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and JFK once stayed, is getting a $298 million makeover after sitting empty since 2013. The Lake Tahoe Proper Resort and Casino will preserve Hollywood's golden era glamour while bringing new life to the historic property.

A piece of Hollywood history is getting its second act, and it's going to be spectacular.

The Cal Neva Resort at Lake Tahoe, once the glamorous playground of Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin, and even President John F. Kennedy, secured $298 million in financing to transform into the Lake Tahoe Proper Resort and Casino. The doors are set to reopen in 2027 after more than a decade of sitting silent.

Sinatra partially owned the property in the 1960s, drawing Hollywood's brightest stars to its shores along the California-Nevada border. The resort's unique engineering meant performers could see every face in the audience from the showroom stage, while secret tunnels let celebrities move throughout the property away from prying eyes.

Monroe spent her final weekend there in July 1962, just days before her death. That bittersweet history is woven into every corner of the property, creating a mystique that developers are determined to preserve.

After closing in 2013 for renovations that never happened, the resort changed hands multiple times, including a brief ownership by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison in 2018. Each time, the project stalled, leaving a historic landmark in limbo.

The Bright Side

Now, developers are bringing thoughtful intention to every detail. The reimagined Circle Bar honors the original design, while the theater will host cultural programming that nods to that golden Hollywood era with modern sensibilities.

"We're creating an experience that feels both rooted in history and completely of the moment," said Brad Korzen, co-founder and CEO of Proper Hospitality. The 197 guest rooms, suites, and private villas will share space with restaurants, bars, a spa, casino, and restored event spaces.

The project promises more than nostalgia. It's expected to boost tourism and create jobs throughout the Lake Tahoe region, breathing economic life into the community while preserving an irreplaceable piece of American cultural history.

"We are focused on preserving its cultural relevance while shaping a future that feels considered, enduring and deeply connected to Lake Tahoe," said Chad McWhinney, CEO of Realberry.

Nearly a century after it first opened, Cal Neva is proving that some stories deserve another chapter.
