The massive 120.8 MW solar facility in southeastern Latvia's Jēkabpils region stretches 3.5 kilometers across land equivalent to 215 football pitches. Lithuanian renewable energy company Green Genius built the €96 million ($113.1 million) project, installing 183,000 solar modules managed by 312 inverters and eleven transformer substations.

The facility is already generating clean electricity for local communities. But Green Genius isn't stopping there.

The company is now constructing a 50 MW/100 MWh battery energy storage system right on site. This addition will transform the solar park into a hybrid energy hub that can store sunshine for cloudy days and nighttime use.

"Projects of this scale deliver tangible value to the power system by increasing local generation, reducing dependence on imports, and providing market stability," said Ruslanas Sklepovičius, CEO of Green Genius. The company's operational solar capacity hit 190 MW last year, with plans for a 2.7 GW portfolio across six European countries.

The battery storage addition makes the impact even bigger. By storing solar energy, the facility can provide power during peak demand hours when electricity typically costs more and strains the grid.

Other Baltic nations are following suit. Last July, Lithuania's Ignitis Renewables launched a 94 MW solar project in western Latvia, proving the region's commitment to renewable energy infrastructure.
