Lawmaker Ships Medical Supplies to Liberian Hospital

A struggling hospital in Liberia just received an entire truckload of desperately needed medical supplies, arriving days after staff staged protests over chronic shortages.

Representative Eugine Kollie of Bong Electoral District #5 handed over the donation to Phebe Referral Hospital on March 2, directly responding to the crisis he witnessed during a visit the week before. The timing couldn't be better for the facility, which serves patients from across the entire country.

Kollie reached out to partners in the United States who filled a 40-foot shipping container with supplies at no cost. His office only paid the $13,575 shipping fee to bring it from America to Liberia.

The donation includes 50 cartons of hospital gloves, 50 cartons of disposable gowns, 30 cartons of alcohol antiseptic, and 30 hospital mattresses. Energy-saving light bulbs were added after Kollie's team noticed dark areas throughout the facility during their earlier visit.

This truckload represents only the first delivery. Another one and a half truckloads will go to other clinics throughout the district, with distribution starting this weekend or early next week.

The Ripple Effect

Phebe isn't just any hospital. As a referral facility, it handles complex cases from across Liberia when local clinics can't provide the necessary care. When Phebe struggles, the entire nation's healthcare system feels the impact.

Kollie is pushing for broader solutions beyond this immediate relief. He's written to the Liberian Legislature about the hospital's ongoing challenges and warned he'll seek an emergency declaration if the government doesn't act.

The lawmaker is also working with the hospital board to clarify Phebe's status and explore whether it should become a full government facility or remain church-managed with government subsidies. Either way, he wants to ensure sustainable support going forward.

Medical Director Minnie Sankawulo-Ricks thanked Kollie on behalf of the entire staff and promised the supplies would be used exactly as intended. The hospital confirmed the items will immediately improve patient care while longer-term solutions are developed.

Kollie pledged his office will keep monitoring to ensure supplies reach those who need them most and that Phebe's broader challenges get addressed.
