Lego Launches Most Detailed Hubble Telescope Model Yet

For the first time, space fans can build a Lego Hubble Space Telescope that shows what's actually happening inside the legendary observatory. The new 1,252-piece set hit stores August 1 for $140, and it's packed with details previous versions never included.

The 15-inch desktop model stands about twice as tall as earlier Lego Hubble releases. It comes with a tiny astronaut figure that gives you a real sense of just how massive the actual telescope is in orbit.

What makes this version special is what you can't usually see. Two removable panels along the telescope's body reveal the mirrors, light baffles, and actual science instruments that have been capturing stunning space images since 1990.

Lego worked directly with NASA and the European Space Agency to get the details right. The model includes the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, Advanced Camera for Surveys, and Near Infrared Camera that are still working on the real Hubble today.

The aperture door opens to show the secondary mirror assembly inside. Three gyroscopes and five guidance sensors are built in as tiny Lego parts, matching the real equipment that keeps Hubble pointed at distant galaxies.

Even the solar panels are accurate to the latest version installed during Hubble's fifth and final servicing mission in 2009. Decals mark the star trackers that help the telescope maintain its position in space.

The display stand includes three translucent pieces showing Hubble's greatest hits: the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula, the Whirlpool Galaxy, and the Butterfly Nebula. A plaque lists dates from all five space shuttle missions that visited Hubble to fix and upgrade it over the years.
