Lego Store Builds Custom Wheelchairs for Wobbly Kittens

A toy store in Wilmington, North Carolina, just proved that sometimes the best solutions come from the most unexpected places.

Bricks & Minifigs received an unusual request in late July when Shelby Cash walked in with Little Star, a rescue kitten born with cerebellar hypoplasia. The condition, commonly called wobbly head syndrome, means Little Star's underdeveloped cerebellum makes walking difficult.

Most cats with this condition adapt well with wheelchairs. But those custom devices typically cost hundreds or even a thousand dollars for a kitten who's still growing.

Someone suggested Cash try finding a Lego expert instead. That's when she called the specialty Lego store.

Employee Ryan accepted the challenge and crafted a custom wheelchair using Lego Technic blocks. After a few adjustments, Little Star took her first steps in her new wheels.

Less than a month later, the store got another call. Rescue Connect needed help for Rex, a four month old kitten with the same condition whose prescribed wheelchair would cost $1,800 and only fit him for about a month.

This time, employee Michael Hawley designed the wheelchair. His childhood experience building elaborate Lego contraptions to defend himself from his older sisters prepared him perfectly for the task.

"I'd say some of my earliest conscious memories are with Legos," Hawley told local news. "They don't make Lego sets for that, so I had to get creative."

The wheelchairs do more than help these kittens get around. For Little Star and Rex, the temporary devices improve their quality of life while they're growing and make it easier for veterinarians to support their daily care.

Jennifer Witkowski, Rex's foster mom, knows how much these moments matter. "It's hard when you're in rehab and you watch them struggle and struggle and you don't know what their future is going to be," she said.

The Lego wheelchairs gave her something she desperately needed: hope that both kittens might have normal lives.

Both kittens are thriving with their custom wheels, proving that creativity and kindness can solve problems that seemed impossibly expensive.
