Liberia Health Minister Steps In to Resolve Hospital Dispute

A potential healthcare crisis at one of Liberia's major hospitals is heading toward resolution thanks to swift intervention from the country's top health official.

Dr. Louis Kpoto, Liberia's Minister of Health, traveled to Phebe Hospital in Bong County this week after the Civil Service Agency suspended seven employees, sparking worker protests that threatened to disrupt care for patients. The Minister addressed staff directly, urging calm and promising to personally resolve their grievances within one week.

The suspended workers include the president of the Phebe Workers Association, a nurse, a plumber, a mortician, a laundryman, and two drivers. They were placed on one month suspension without pay following allegations of disrupting hospital operations on February 23.

The Civil Service Agency accused the workers of allowing journalists into patient wards and broadcasting from sensitive areas, which officials said violated patient privacy and civil service regulations. Workers responded with a go-slow action that began affecting hospital services.

Dr. Kpoto's visit came after initial meetings between the workers association, hospital administration, and government officials yielded only temporary peace. When protests resumed Tuesday morning, blocking some staff from entering the facility, the Health Minister made the personal trip to Phebe Hospital.

Rather than letting bureaucracy drag on for months, Dr. Kpoto chose immediate action. She promised to personally follow up on salary issues, human resources concerns, and working conditions that may have contributed to the tensions.
