London Hosts First College Football Game at Wembley

Wembley Stadium just discovered what makes American college football fans different from any other sports crowd in the world.

The iconic London venue hosted its inaugural college football game on Saturday, with Kansas facing Arizona State in the Union Jack Classic. About 15,000 fans traveled from the United States, bringing their marching bands, tailgate parties, and legendary school spirit to Britain.

Unlike NFL games where fans choose their teams, college loyalty runs in families. Hannah, a Kansas supporter, told BBC Sport that college fans aren't just fanatical but "rabid." At Wembley, families showed up representing multiple generations of the same school, some traveling thousands of miles to support their alma mater.

The atmosphere started seven hours before kickoff. Tailgate parties filled the stadium grounds as Arizona State fans packed nearly 2,000 people into their alumni celebration. Big 12 Conference commissioner Brett Yormark said the event "exceeded my expectations" and confirmed other colleges want to play in London. With a multi-year Wembley deal signed and interest from additional schools, this could become an annual tradition connecting American campus culture with international fans.
