Long Island Neighbors Unite to Save Cat From Storm Drain

A stray cat trapped in a frozen storm drain brought an entire Long Island neighborhood together in a rescue effort that proves kindness shows up even in the coldest weather.

John Debacker, a Bellmore resident and animal rescue activist, spotted the cat descending into a storm drain filled with snow on Monday morning. He and several neighbors rushed to help, but the metal grate covering the drain was too heavy to lift, even with multiple people trying.

Then luck arrived in the form of a plow truck heading down the street. Debacker and the others flagged down the driver, who immediately stopped to help. The plow's equipment lifted the heavy grate with ease.

But the cat was still somewhere deep in the pipes, too scared to come out. The rescuers left food near the opening and kept watch. By Tuesday morning, their patience paid off when the cat finally emerged to safety.

Rebecca DiFebo, a Deer Park resident who helped with the rescue, said watching strangers work together warmed her heart. The plow driver didn't have to stop. The neighbors didn't have to spend hours in the cold. But they all chose compassion over convenience.
