Lorain Family Honors Fallen Officer With Kindness Campaign

One year after losing her husband, Jess Wagner stood outside Lorain City Hall with a simple but powerful message: turn tragedy into kindness, and make every interaction count.

Officer Phillip Wagner died at age 35 after a gunman ambushed him and fellow Officer Peter Gale during their lunch break in Lorain, Ohio. A third officer, Brent Payne, was also shot during the standoff that followed.

On the anniversary of his death, hundreds of community members gathered for a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony. But the Wagner family wanted to do more than remember. They wanted to inspire.

The family handed out hot dogs and ice cream to everyone who attended, honoring Phillip's favorite foods while launching their random acts of kindness initiative. "We're going to cook you hot dogs and ice cream as a random act of kindness," explained Lenny Bush, Wagner's father-in-law.

For Jess Wagner, July 24 now marks a fresh start. She's asking others to see it not as a day of mourning, but as a chance to make someone's day better.

"We walk into this year without Phil, seeing the joy in things, seeing the ways we can impact others and the things you can do to make somebody realize they are where they need to be," she said.

The Ripple Effect

The Wagner family hopes their kindness spreads far beyond a single day. Bush explained that bringing the community together through simple acts of generosity honors Phillip's memory in the most meaningful way possible.

"We do it because we want a community to get closer together and be better for everything, and hopefully his death was not in vain," he said.

Phillip's sister, Megan Wagner, remembered him as deeply caring, loyal, funny, and adventurous. Those qualities now fuel a movement that's transforming how Lorain residents see each other and their community.

The city is also considering renaming a local road "Police Officer Phillip Wagner Memorial Highway." The proposal would give residents a permanent reminder of his service and the kindness campaign his family started in his honor.

What began as a memorial is becoming a lasting legacy of compassion.
