Lost Dog Travels 30 Miles Home After Fireworks Scare

When Fig the Australian shepherd bolted during Fourth of July fireworks, her family refused to give up hope for 10 days until they found her 30 miles from home.

The 7-year-old dog ran from her California home after getting spooked by the holiday celebrations. Owner Kattie Cassaday immediately launched a massive search effort with her family.

"I felt like, she's out there. I know she's out there if I could just find her," Cassaday said. For over a week, the family drove countless miles, posted flyers throughout the area, and searched anywhere Fig might have wandered.

The family filed a missing dog report with the Tulare County Sheriff's Office. Sergeant Ricky Morley took the case and followed up on leads from the community.

"As soon I talked to Sergeant Morley, I just knew this person is gonna find my dog," Cassaday said. Her instinct proved right when someone spotted Fig nearly 30 miles from home and contacted authorities.

On July 15, the sheriff's office shared video of Fig's joyful reunion with her family. The moment Cassaday saw her dog again, all the stress melted away.

"When she hopped out of the car, it was just like all this relief," Cassaday told reporters after their reunion.
