Lost Florida Man, 78, Reunited With K-9 Who Saved His Life

When Joceli Coutinho wandered into the Florida woods without food, water, or his medications, his family feared the worst. But a bloodhound named Remington had other plans.

The 78-year-old grandfather disappeared from Atherton Avenue in Lehigh Acres on January 28. Coutinho lives with Parkinson's disease and dementia, and authorities launched an urgent search involving K-9 units, aviation support, swamp buggies, and dozens of boots on the ground.

Remington, who had just turned 3, joined the search the next morning. His handler, K-9 Deputy Rob Elwell, used Coutinho's flip-flops to help the bloodhound pick up the scent.

"I was able to take gauze and rub the flip flops for several minutes, and then I placed it into a jar and heated it up to bring the odor out," Elwell explained. From there, Remington went to work.

The bloodhound needed just nine minutes to track Coutinho through less than half a mile of dense brush at Buckingham Trail Preserve. He found the elderly man alive in the wooded area near Agape Christian Fellowship Church along Buckingham Road, despite freezing overnight temperatures.

"The whole family cried when we heard the news," said Thomas Mafra, Coutinho's grandson. "It's incredible. It was a sense of relief, full of emotions."

Coutinho was immediately taken for medical evaluation and recovered safely.

On February 12, Remington and Coutinho reunited at the Lee County Sheriff's Office for a celebration that melted hearts across social media. The photos show Coutinho smiling alongside the gentle bloodhound who saved his life, a testament to the extraordinary capabilities of working K-9s.

For his heroic efforts, Remington earned himself a juicy steak. But the real reward was seeing the man he rescued safe and surrounded by family.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno commended everyone involved, from patrol officers to the Lehigh Fire Department. But it was Remington's instincts, training, and determination that made the difference when time was running out.

The reunion reminds us that heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and species.
