Lost Husky Sierra Reunites With Owner After 12 Years

When Sierra arrived at Hernando County Animal Services in Brooksville, Florida on April 8, she looked like she'd lived a hard life. The elderly husky had missing patches of fur, moved slowly, and showed signs of years spent on the streets.

But unlike most strays, Sierra had something that would change everything: a microchip.

When officials scanned the chip, they found a phone number for a man named Bryce. He hadn't seen Sierra in 12 years, not since she disappeared in New Mexico during a move in 2014 when a friend was watching her.

"When Bryce saw Sierra's intake photos, his heart broke for the condition she was in, but at the same time, he was overwhelmed with emotion knowing she was still out there and that he might get the chance to see her again," the Hernando County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook.

The team at Animal Services got to work giving Sierra the care she desperately needed. She received medical treatment, medicated baths, regular walks, and what officials called "endless love from our staff and volunteers."

Eight days later, they launched an ambitious plan to reunite the pair. A relay team of 18 volunteers drove Sierra 1,400 miles across five states in a single weekend, from Florida to Bryce's current home in Midland, Texas.

Best Western sponsored the journey, putting up volunteers along the way. The social media account We Rate Dogs helped coordinate the cross-country effort.
