Luna County Gets $2.9M for Roads and Jobs Near Mexico Border

Luna County, New Mexico just landed $2.9 million in federal funding to turn a traffic problem into an economic opportunity that could transform the region for generations.

The county sits along the Mexico border, where booming trade between the two countries has sent heavy freight trucks rumbling through downtown Columbus and Deming on roads built decades ago. A 2017 planning study found the aging infrastructure simply wasn't designed to handle the weight or volume of modern international commerce.

Representative Gabe Vasquez announced the Department of Transportation funding on July 31, celebrating a win that addresses both safety concerns and economic potential. The money will help Luna County develop an industrial park near the Columbus Land Port of Entry while upgrading roads to protect truckers and residents.

"Luna County has a great opportunity to grow its international trade with Mexico and create more jobs and revenue, but the county's roads and infrastructure must be improved," Vasquez said. He emphasized that economic growth shouldn't come at the expense of local safety.

Luna County Manager Chris Brice called the funding a dream coming closer to reality. He said the investment sets the stage for the largest strategic expansion the county has ever seen, potentially bringing thousands of new jobs and increased financial benefits to the community.

He's also cosponsoring legislation to expand rural road funding nationwide, increase bridge safety investments, and prevent fatal truck-trailer crashes through better safety standards. These efforts could multiply the impact far beyond Luna County's borders.
