MacArthur Foundation Launches Nigeria Next for Young Leaders
The MacArthur Foundation just launched Nigeria Next, a major initiative investing in young Nigerians through digital tools, innovation spaces, and civic participation. With 60% of Nigeria's population under 30, this program aims to unlock the potential of millions of young people shaping their nation's future.
Young Nigerians are about to get a powerful boost. The MacArthur Foundation has unveiled Nigeria Next, a comprehensive initiative designed to empower the country's youth through digital inclusion, innovation, and civic engagement.
The program arrives at a critical moment for Africa's most populous nation. Nigeria's population is projected to continue rapid growth, with 60% of citizens currently under age 30 and 42% under 15.
Before launching Nigeria Next, the foundation spent months listening. Staff traveled across Nigeria from 2022 onward, meeting with communities in cities like Kafanchan, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Bauchi, Maiduguri, Kano, Lagos, and Abuja to understand what young people actually need.
The initiative uses grants, impact investments, and thought leadership to tackle real barriers. It focuses on expanding access to digital tools, building innovation ecosystems, promoting research-based policies, and creating more opportunities for civic participation.
"We believe that with greater access to digital tools, spaces that catalyze their creativity, and amplification of their voices in civic spaces, young people can unleash their potential and move us toward a new Nigeria," said Kole Shettima, director of MacArthur's Nigeria Office.

The program builds on the foundation's previous "On Nigeria" project, which ran from 2016 to 2024 and focused on accountability, governance, and transparency. Now the spotlight shifts to the next generation.
Why This Inspires
Young Nigerians are already proving what's possible. They're making breakthroughs in technology and entertainment while reimagining civic engagement on issues from clean energy and climate change to democracy, transparency, and gender-based violence.
MacArthur's approach deliberately frames youth as assets rather than problems to solve. The foundation partners with its Technology in the Public Interest and Journalism and Media programs, plus other philanthropic organizations, to multiply impact.
The conversations that shaped Nigeria Next revealed interconnected themes around young people, civic participation, technology, and media. Rather than imposing solutions from outside, the initiative responds to what young Nigerians themselves identified as crucial needs.
With intentional support and resources, Nigeria's young majority can drive the national progress their country needs.
