MacKenzie Scott Gives $26B: 'Won't Stop Until Safe Is Empty

MacKenzie Scott has given away more money faster than any individual philanthropist this century, and her secret isn't just generosity. It's how she thinks about wealth itself.

In just a few years, Scott has donated over $26 billion to nonprofits across America. That's not just impressive because of the dollar amount, but because of the pace.

Most ultra-wealthy families give away only 1.2% of their assets each year, according to research from consulting firm Bridgespan Group. That percentage hasn't budged since 2017, even as their fortunes have grown by roughly 9% annually.

Jeffrey Bradach, co-founder of Bridgespan, calls this pattern "slow philanthropy." Many billionaires sign giving pledges but rarely follow through at the speed they promise.

The Institute for Policy Studies found that three-quarters of original U.S. Giving Pledge signers who are still alive remain billionaires today. They've actually gotten wealthier since signing their pledges.

Scott stands apart. She practices "trust-based philanthropy," giving nonprofits unrestricted funds with little oversight.

"Unlike traditional funding processes that often involve lengthy applications and specific restrictions, her style empowers organizations to determine how best to direct funds quickly and innovatively," said Noni Ramos, CEO of Housing Trust Silicon Valley, after receiving $30 million from Scott.

Other billionaires often delay giving because failure feels worse in philanthropy than in investing. They fixate on overhead, struggle to delegate, and underestimate how much money nonprofits can actually use.

For many donors, keeping money in the bank and giving later feels easier than acting now. Without pressure to give, delay becomes costless and easy to justify.

The Ripple Effect

Scott's approach is inspiring other major philanthropists to reconsider their giving. Melinda French Gates has publicly praised Scott's work, noting that actions speak louder than words when it comes to charity.

"Look at what she has said about historically Black colleges in the United States and the importance of them," French Gates told Fortune. "People are maybe not always speaking about their grant-making, but boy, they are doing it behind the scenes."

Organizations receiving Scott's donations report being able to address urgent needs immediately rather than waiting years for traditional funding cycles. Housing organizations, education nonprofits, and community foundations have launched programs they'd only dreamed about before her gifts arrived.

The key difference, Bradach notes, is that Scott sees her fortune as something to be given, not managed. In her 2019 Giving Pledge letter, she wrote simply: "I won't wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty."

That mindset shift from wealth management to generous giving might be the most valuable thing Scott shares with the world.
