Madison Schools Launch 5-Year Plan to Boost Achievement

Madison students are getting a roadmap to success that puts belonging and achievement at the center of everything their schools do.

The Madison Metropolitan School District just launched "MMSD: Excellence Together," a five-year strategic plan running through 2031. The initiative brings together teachers, families, students, and community partners around one shared goal: making sure every child feels valued and reaches their potential.

Superintendent Joe Gothard says the plan reflects a simple truth. "It is our commitment to every student and their success, and it recognizes that our greatest progress will come when our staff, families, students and community partners are working toward a shared vision."

The district has set three clear targets to measure success by 2031. They'll track overall academic achievement, how many students feel they belong at school, and how many graduate with credits or credentials that have real value after graduation.

Five core commitments guide the work: leading with equity, fostering belonging, delivering meaningful learning, improving with purpose, and embracing collective impact. These aren't just buzzwords but practical foundations for confronting inequities and creating welcoming environments where challenging, culturally relevant learning happens every day.

The planning process started in January 2025 and included voices from across Madison. Staff members and community members shared input, while steering committees and focus groups reviewed the developing plan. RTI International, experts in school strategic planning, supported the district throughout the process.

The Ripple Effect

When schools commit to measuring both academic success and student belonging, they're recognizing what research has shown for years: kids learn best when they feel safe, valued, and connected. Madison's decision to track how students feel about their school alongside test scores sends a powerful message that the whole child matters.

Assistant Superintendent Cindy Green emphasizes how the plan creates accountability. "It gives us a way to measure our efforts, keep student success at the center of our work and adjust as needed." The district will use these commitments and objectives to guide planning, decision-making, and continuous improvement across all schools.

Implementation is already underway, with resources and budgets being aligned to support the vision. Every Madison student deserves to belong, grow, and succeed.
