Maid of Honor Plays 3-Year-Old Voice Memo at Wedding

Caroline Powell thought she knew what to expect from her maid of honor's wedding speech, but Anna Cooper had a secret she'd been keeping for nearly three years.

The two Nashville women have been best friends since 2004, when Cooper's family moved two houses down from the Coady family. Over two decades of friendship, they developed a habit of sending each other marathon voice memos that Cooper describes as "podcast episodes."

One of those recordings came in the early morning hours of September 17, 2023. Caroline had just returned home from a wedding where she'd met Colton Powell at the rehearsal dinner. He was supposed to be at law school in Malibu but made a last-minute decision to attend.

"I was slaphappy and so giddy, so naturally I sent a seven-minute voice memo to Anna," Caroline, now 26, tells PEOPLE. She gushed about the stranger she'd just met, never imagining where the connection would lead.

While Caroline eventually forgot about the recording, Cooper saved it. Something about her best friend's excitement told her this might be the real thing.

"In the full seven-minute recording, it was so obvious Caroline was completely smitten with Colton," Cooper, 25, explains. She knew Colton's reputation as a good guy and felt confident this organic meeting had real potential.

Just weeks later, Caroline flew to Malibu to visit Colton. By the end of that trip, they were officially dating.

Fast forward to July 2026. Caroline and Colton stood at their own wedding reception as Cooper took the microphone for her maid of honor speech. Without warning, she pressed play on that old voice memo.

The room heard Caroline's voice from three years earlier, breathlessly telling her best friend about a guy she'd just met. The same guy now standing beside her as her husband.

"Hearing it again felt incredibly sweet and surreal," Caroline says. "I'm so grateful to have that moment preserved, and even more grateful that Anna trusted her intuition to include it in her speech."

The surprise transformed an already emotional speech into a full-circle moment. It honored not just the couple's love story, but also the 20-year friendship that had been there to witness every chapter.
