Major Charities Now Accept Crypto, Raising Over $100M

When Save The Children became the first international charity to accept Bitcoin in 2013, few predicted the revolution to come. Today, crypto donations have crossed the $100 million milestone, transforming how people support causes they care about.

The shift makes sense when you look at the numbers. Crypto donors typically give more than traditional donors, bringing fresh resources to organizations that need them most.

Save The Children, founded over 100 years ago by British sisters Eglantyne Jebb and Dorothy Buxton, has helped children through wars, famines, and disasters worldwide. In 2025, they co-launched the Bitcoin Humanitarian Alliance to promote financial freedom globally.

Médecins Sans Frontières took a different approach. The medical relief organization launched "Stake2Care" in 2024, letting Ethereum holders donate their staking rewards without touching their principal investment. Since 1971, MSF has delivered medical care in war zones and disaster areas without regard to politics or borders.

GiveDirectly started as a student project at MIT and Harvard in 2012 and now fights poverty through direct cash transfers. They pioneered a Universal Basic Income program in Kenya in 2016, now expanded to Malawi and Mozambique. Through the Endaoment platform, donors can give using over 1,000 different tokens.

The Water Project has installed 2,810 water points across sub-Saharan Africa since 2006. The crypto community has donated over $12 million to help build wells, rainwater systems, and solar pumps in communities that desperately need clean water.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has championed digital rights since 1990. Founded by activists during the early internet era, EFF defends encryption, fights government surveillance, and protects online freedom through legal advocacy and court cases.

These charities prove that cryptocurrency isn't just about investment returns. Digital currencies are creating new pathways for generosity, letting donors support humanitarian work with unprecedented ease and transparency. The technology that once seemed abstract now funds real water wells in Kenya, medical supplies in conflict zones, and cash transfers to families escaping poverty.

As more organizations embrace crypto donations, the barrier between digital innovation and real-world impact continues to dissolve.
