Malaysia and Uzbekistan Team Up on Smart Farming Tech

Malaysia and Uzbekistan just signed a game-changing agricultural partnership that brings together the best of both worlds: Malaysia's tech expertise and Uzbekistan's experience farming in challenging climates.

The two countries announced their strategic cooperation during a bilateral meeting in Tashkent, where Malaysia's Agriculture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu met with his Uzbek counterpart Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov. Their focus? Using artificial intelligence, digital agriculture, and smart farming to build food security that can withstand climate change.

Malaysia is bringing something special to the table: biofloc technology, an innovative aquaculture system that produces more seafood even in limited spaces. The country has already perfected shrimp farming techniques using this method, and Uzbekistan is eager to learn.

In return, Uzbekistan's expertise in managing agriculture under dry, harsh conditions could help Malaysia prepare for increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. It's a partnership built on complementary strengths rather than competition.

The collaboration goes beyond government agreements. Malaysian agricultural technology company Meraque Group just launched operations in Uzbekistan, specializing in robotics, drones, and precision agriculture technologies that make farming more efficient and sustainable.

Research institutions are getting in on the action too. Malaysia's Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and Uzbekistan's Centre of Knowledge and Innovation in Agriculture are finalizing an agreement that will enable scientist exchanges and joint research projects.

This partnership creates opportunities far beyond the two countries involved. A joint committee will explore investment and trade opportunities, opening Central Asian markets to Malaysian companies while giving Malaysian farmers access to new technologies and techniques.

The numbers tell a success story already in motion. Trade between Malaysia and Uzbekistan reached RM338.48 million last year, with Malaysia exporting coffee, cocoa, tea, and processed foods while importing high-value fruits like grapes.

The cooperation tackles one of humanity's biggest challenges: feeding a growing population while protecting the environment. By combining innovation with sustainability, both countries are proving that technology and tradition can work hand in hand.
