Malaysia to Produce First Human Vaccine by 2028

Malaysia is about to make medical history by producing its first human vaccine on home soil, a breakthrough that could protect millions during the next health crisis.

The country currently imports every single vaccine it uses, depending on suppliers from eight different nations. By 2028, that changes when local company Pharmaniaga begins manufacturing PCV13, a vaccine protecting against 13 types of bacteria that cause deadly pneumonia and meningitis.

The technology comes through a partnership with a Chinese company, marking Malaysia's first step toward vaccine independence. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang says this move addresses a painful lesson learned during COVID-19.

"When you rely on other countries, they will decide when to deliver the vaccine to us and they will decide what price they want to sell to us," Chang told The Star. During the pandemic, Malaysia waited while other nations controlled both supply and pricing of life-saving vaccines.

The initiative goes beyond one vaccine. Malaysia is already developing a second vaccine, a hexavalent shot for children that protects against six diseases at once. The government initially aimed for vaccine production capability by 2030 but now expects to hit that goal two years early.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough positions Malaysia alongside a small group of nations that can respond quickly to health emergencies without waiting for international shipments. Future pandemics won't leave the country vulnerable to supply chain disruptions or price gouging.

Local production also means better affordability for Malaysian families and potential export opportunities to neighboring Southeast Asian countries facing similar import challenges. The technology transfer builds homegrown expertise that could lead to developing additional vaccines for regional health threats.
