Man Runs Into Fire to Save Elderly Neighbors in Kansas
Burt Haigh was walking his dogs when he spotted flames at a neighbor's home and heard screams for help. Without hesitation, he charged into the burning house to rescue an elderly couple trapped inside.
Burt Haigh handed his dogs to a neighbor and ran straight into a wall of flames when he heard elderly neighbors crying for help in Bonner Springs, Kansas.
The fire erupted around 7:12 p.m. on a Monday evening along Allcutt Avenue. Haigh was simply walking his dogs when he turned the corner and saw eight to ten feet of flames shooting from his neighbors' front entryway.
Inside, an elderly woman using a walker was trapped near the fire. Haigh pushed through burning furniture in the narrow hallway, trying to clear a path. "We got all tangled up in her walker and just went down together," he said.
The flames grew faster than he could move the couple. Haigh pushed them toward the back of the home as the passage narrowed, but he couldn't get them out before firefighters arrived.
While Haigh battled the blaze inside, neighbors sprang into action. One called 911 after taking his dogs. Others rushed over with fire extinguishers and water. A former firefighter who lived nearby helped manage the scene until first responders arrived.
Police arrived within minutes. Officers pulled one resident through the front door while fire crews broke through to reach the second person still trapped inside.

Two officers were injured during the rescue, one suffering burns and lacerations requiring stitches, another treated for smoke inhalation. Haigh also suffered burns. All three were treated and released from the hospital.
The Ripple Effect
Captain Heather Pate of the Bonner Springs Police says Haigh's quick action likely saved lives. "Had he not been walking the dogs by and noticed the fire, we have no idea how long it would have taken for someone else to notice it," she said.
The elderly couple remains in critical condition, but they're alive because one man refused to walk past their screams. Haigh admits he second guesses his every move that night, but he has no regrets.
"She was screaming for help," he said simply. "I'm glad I tried."
Pate called it more than one person's heroism. "Yesterday it wasn't just one Samaritan. It was a whole neighborhood stepping up."
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office, and officials remind residents to check smoke detectors and keep exits clear.
Sometimes courage looks like an ordinary person on an ordinary evening who chooses to run toward danger instead of away from it.
