Man Saves Pregnant Woman From Sinking Car on Her Birthday

Logan Hayes was stuck in Friday morning traffic on Interstate 95 when he spotted something that made his heart stop: a car sinking into a pond near a Martin County rest stop.

Without a second thought, the private sport fishing boat worker jumped out of his car, ran to the water's edge, and dove in. He swam frantically toward the vehicle as it tilted deeper into the murky water.

When Hayes reached the car, only the back passenger door remained above the surface. Inside, he found a terrified woman asking how to escape the flooding vehicle.

"She comes in between the two front seats and climbs into the backseat," Hayes recalled. "The car is now starting to tilt more and roll down. Water's flooding the car."

He guided her through the narrow opening just as the vehicle began its final descent. When she dropped into the water beside him, Hayes grabbed her around the waist to steady her and that's when he realized she was pregnant.

The two swam together toward shore, covering about 50 feet before reaching safety. Behind them, the car vanished completely beneath the water's surface.

Martin County Fire Rescue crews arrived minutes later and confirmed no one else was trapped inside. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital in Fort Pierce, where the story took an even more remarkable turn.

This rescue became triply extraordinary later that day. Not only did Hayes save two lives in one breathtaking moment, but the woman gave birth to a healthy baby at the hospital just hours after her ordeal.

And there's one more detail that makes this story shine even brighter: it all happened on the woman's 29th birthday. She started the day crashing into a pond and ended it holding her newborn baby, alive because a stranger chose to act.

Hayes later spoke with the woman's fiancé, who thanked him for saving his growing family. For Hayes, who had helped struggling swimmers to shore before but never performed a true rescue, the experience felt surreal.

"I was just kind of dumbfounded," he said. "I just couldn't believe that at that exact moment I happened to be driving by at the exact time."

Sometimes being in the right place means everything, and one Florida woman and her baby are proof that everyday heroes are real.
