Man Who Can't Swim Saves Baby Blown Into Lake Michigan

Lio Cundiff can't swim, but that didn't stop him from jumping into Lake Michigan's frigid waters to save a stranger's baby.

On Wednesday afternoon at Belmont Harbor in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, powerful wind gusts ripped a stroller from a mother's grasp and sent it rolling into the lake with her 8-month-old daughter still strapped inside.

Cundiff saw the stroller blow into the water and heard the mother screaming. He knew he had only seconds to act.

"I can tell she was too panicked to do anything, so I was like, 'I guess I'm jumping in,'" Cundiff told ABC7 from his hospital bed. "That baby was—I wasn't going to let that baby die. That's crazy."

The stroller landed upright in the water, a stroke of luck that kept the baby's face above the surface. Still, the infant dipped under the waves several times as Cundiff reached her around 3 p.m.

He managed to keep the baby's head above water until other witnesses helped pull them both back onto dry land. The little girl was breathing and crying when they got her out.

Chicago police transported the baby to Lurie Children's Hospital for observation. She was listed in good condition, thanks entirely to Cundiff's split-second decision to act despite the freezing water and his own inability to swim.

Cundiff's rescue reminds us that heroism isn't about having special skills or training. It's about choosing to act when someone needs help, even when you're scared or unprepared.

The good Samaritan was admitted to the hospital overnight for heart monitoring after his time in the frigid lake. But his thoughts weren't on his own recovery.

"I hope she has a really cool future, and I'm happy I was there," he said.

Sometimes the difference between tragedy and triumph is one person willing to take the leap.
