Marshall Student Wins $10K Scholarship for NASA Research

Ethan Bowens spent his college years juggling hurdles on the track and solving problems that astronauts face 250 miles above Earth.

The Marshall University senior just became one of only 42 student-athletes nationwide to win the NCAA's Spring 2026 Postgraduate Scholarship. The $10,000 award recognizes students who excel in sports, academics, and community leadership.

Bowens didn't just run track at Marshall. He dove deep into exercise science research that could help future space travelers stay healthy during long missions.

His undergraduate project examined how muscles shrink during space travel based on an astronaut's age and gender. The research revealed new insights about muscle loss in zero gravity and how resistance training might counteract those effects.

That work caught NASA's attention. The Wayne, West Virginia native earned a research fellowship through NASA's West Virginia Space Grant Consortium while still competing for the Thundering Herd.

Last October, Bowens took home the Sun Belt Conference's highest academic honor for male student-athletes. Before that, Marshall's Health Sciences Day recognized him as their best undergraduate student.

Gerald Harrison, Marshall's athletics director, praised Bowens for representing what college athletics should look like. "Being one of only 42 recognized among thousands of student-athletes nationally is an amazing accomplishment," Harrison said.

Why This Inspires

Bowens proves that the old choice between athletics and academics is a false one. He didn't sacrifice either passion to pursue the other.

Now Bowens heads to graduate school with funding secured and real-world experience studying problems that matter. The research he started at Marshall could one day help astronauts maintain their health during missions to Mars.
