Martha's Vineyard Seniors Receive $2.8M in Scholarships

Martha's Vineyard just showed what community really means, awarding $2.8 million in scholarships to graduating high school seniors in a ceremony that honored both future dreams and cherished memories.

Nearly 200 graduating seniors from Martha's Vineyard Regional High School gathered Friday evening at the historic Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs for Class Night, an island tradition celebrating achievement before Sunday's graduation. Local organizations, families, and community groups presented the life-changing awards.

The biggest surprise came from an unexpected source. Raphael Fusco, a longtime school custodian who died in April, left $250,000 in his estate to create annual $10,000 scholarships for one male and one female student based on financial need. This year's first recipients were Danielle Meyer and Bryan Fernandes.

Some scholarships carried bittersweet weight. The Portuguese-American Club awarded three scholarships in memory of Patricia "Tricia" Bergeron and her partner Roy Scheffer, who died in a New Year's Day boating accident that devastated the island community. For over 20 years, Bergeron had presented a hockey scholarship honoring her teenage son Eric, who died in a 2001 car accident.

Club President Gina deBettencourt honored Bergeron's tradition of urging students to wear seatbelts, adding her own safety plea. "You do not want families up here in your memory, and I am asking you tonight, if you are on the water, please wear the life jacket," she told the students.

Senior Xeandre Miller beamed with pride knowing his father Shane would watch him cross the stage. Miller, heading to Cape Cod Community College to study aviation mechanics, captured the evening's spirit of gratitude and hope. His teacher Kiely Rigali stood beside him and his father for photos, celebrating the support system that helped him reach this milestone.

Principal Sean Mulvey reminded students that tonight's generosity was really about paying it forward. "Tonight is all about people helping other people," he said, encouraging graduates to remember this kindness and give back to their own communities, whether on Martha's Vineyard or beyond.

Director of Guidance John Fiorito praised families for handling the scholarship process with grace despite the high stakes. With nearly $1.3 million available for immediate use and another $1.52 million in post-graduation scholarships, emotions could have run high, but respect and appreciation ruled the day.

From the Agricultural Society to the NAACP, from the Striped Bass Derby to the Film Society, dozens of island organizations opened their hearts and wallets, proving that investing in young people is the best investment a community can make.
