Mary Washington Wins First Title on Buzzer-Beater Rebound

Colin Mitchell grabbed a missed shot and put it through the hoop as the buzzer sounded, giving the University of Mary Washington its first basketball national championship in a game that showcased everything great about college sports.

The Division III title game against Emory University came down to seconds. Mary Washington guard Kye Robinson drove toward the basket and launched a fallaway shot while tumbling out of bounds with time running out.

The shot missed, but Mitchell was in exactly the right spot. He snagged the rebound and scored as the clock hit zero, sending his teammates rushing toward him in celebration.

"We trusted Kye to get to the spot," Mitchell said afterward. "And he got there and shot a good shot. Right place, right time."

Robinson admitted his shot wasn't ideal. "I feel like I was making it kind of hard on myself," he said. "Definitely the best missed shot of my life."

The game had swung back and forth all night. Emory's Ethan Fauss hit a game-tying three-pointer with just 12 seconds left, setting up the dramatic finish.

Earlier in the second half, Emory built an eight-point lead. Mary Washington responded with a 14-2 run to claw back into contention, showing the grit that defined their record-breaking season.

Robinson led the Eagles with 27 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. His performance throughout the game kept Mary Washington close enough to win it at the end.

Why This Inspires

This championship meant even more because of last year's heartbreak. Mary Washington lost to Emory in the tournament a year ago, then knocked off defending champion Trinity in this year's semifinals to get their rematch.

The title capped a program-record 30-win season. Every practice, every extra shot, every moment of preparation led to Mitchell's rebound with zeros on the clock.

Division III schools don't get the spotlight that Division I programs receive, but the passion burns just as bright. These student-athletes play for the love of the game, making moments like this even sweeter.
