Young boy holding massive prehistoric Megalodon shark tooth next to his face for size comparison

Maryland Boy Finds 4.5-Inch Megalodon Tooth After 5 Years

🦸 Hero Alert

After five years of searching beaches, young Jaxon Hinton discovered a massive 4.5-inch Megalodon tooth along Maryland's Calvert Cliffs. His father, who's found over 300 such teeth in 23 years, says only two came close to this size.

Jaxon Hinton's hands flew to his face as he spotted something incredible emerging from the sand beneath the shallow water at Calvert Cliffs. The young Maryland fossil hunter had just found what he'd been searching for since he was old enough to walk the beach.

The 4.5-inch tooth belonged to a Megalodon, the massive prehistoric shark that once ruled the oceans. These ancient predators could grow nearly 50 feet long and disappeared from Earth millions of years ago.

"He started yelling 'Dad, Dad, Dad' with his hands covering his face," recalls his father Jason Hinton. Jason's first thought was panic, wondering if his son had been hurt as he ran to catch up.

Instead, Jaxon pointed down at the root of a massive shark tooth barely visible in the sand. The pair had already walked past that exact spot earlier in the day.

For Jaxon, the discovery marked the payoff of nearly five years of dedicated searching. He's spent countless beach days in every kind of weather, never turning down an opportunity to hunt for fossils with his dad.

Jason has been searching for Megalodon teeth for 23 years and has found over 300. Only two came close to matching his son's find in size.

What makes this tooth truly special is its condition. "The hardest part is finding them with all of the serrations, enamel, root and burlet still intact," Jason explains. Jaxon's tooth has it all.

Since the discovery, Jaxon has held the tooth every day, watching it dry out and reveal its true lighter color. He's been researching which position in the Megalodon's mouth his tooth would have occupied.

Sunny's Take

Jason says watching his son achieve this goal brought a flood of emotions. "He's determined, devoted, understands that sometimes we won't always find something but he never gives up," the proud father shared.

These beach hunts represent more than fossil hunting for the Hinton family. Jason remembers similar adventures with his own father and knows Jaxon will one day share these stories with his own children.

The young adventurer also loves fishing, hunting, and metal detecting when he's not searching for fossils. His ultimate dream isn't paleontology though—Jaxon wants to be a professional baseball player.

Already, Jaxon has set his next goal: finding a five-inch Megalodon tooth or bigger. His advice for other young fossil hunters is simple: "Don't give up, and if you're unsure of something, flip it over."

The Calvert Cliffs continue to hold treasures from an ancient ocean, and Jaxon will keep searching.
