Maryland County Wins $8.3M for Clean Energy Projects

Montgomery County, Maryland is getting a major clean energy upgrade thanks to an $8.3 million investment from the state. The funding will modernize public buildings, slash energy costs, and help communities stay powered up during storms and emergencies.

The money will support 20 different projects across county facilities, from recreation centers to parks to parking garages. Solar panels, backup power systems, and energy efficiency improvements will roll out across neighborhoods that need them most during extreme weather.

The investment pays for itself quickly. Taxpayers will save an estimated $439,000 every year on energy bills, with total savings reaching more than $11 million over the lifetime of these projects.

Seven recreation centers and one health center in rural areas and underserved communities will get solar-powered backup systems. When the power goes out, these buildings will become "resilience hubs" where neighbors can access heating, cooling, refrigeration, and power during emergencies.

Montgomery Parks is expanding solar energy too, with new installations at the Wheaton Sports Pavilion and Olney Manor Recreational Park. They're even testing an innovative "agrivoltaics" project at the Agricultural History Farm Park that combines solar panels with farming.

The Ripple Effect

The clean electricity generated annually will be enough to power roughly 580 homes. That's serious energy independence for the community.

The environmental benefits add up fast too. These projects will reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking seven million miles of gas-powered driving off the road each year.

The county is using a smart financing approach called a third-party power purchase model for solar installations. This strategy keeps upfront costs low for taxpayers while creating opportunities for local businesses to get involved.

Montgomery County is building toward an ambitious long-term vision of 14 resilience hubs at community centers and nine more at other public facilities. With future battery storage additions, these sites will become reliable havens during climate emergencies.
