Maryland Launches $72M to Slash Energy Bills for Families

Families across Maryland will soon have real options to take control of their rising energy bills, thanks to a major funding launch announced this week by Governor Wes Moore.

The Maryland Energy Administration unveiled five programs totaling more than $72 million to help residents invest in clean energy solutions that directly reduce monthly costs. The initiatives focus on those who need relief most: households struggling with high energy burdens.

The centerpiece is the Residential Energy Equity program, which provides over $40 million in grants for energy efficiency home improvements and rooftop solar installations for lower income homeowners. Nonprofit organizations and local governments will work directly with eligible residents to make these upgrades happen.

Income qualified families can also tap into the Maryland Solar Access program, receiving up to $7,500 per household for installing solar panels. The program pays $750 per kilowatt of solar capacity installed, with $10 million available this fiscal year.

For residents making the switch to electric vehicles, a rebate program offers financial help for installing home charging equipment. Up to $1.5 million is available to offset those upfront costs, helping families avoid gas stations altogether.

The state is also investing $10 million to electrify delivery trucks, school buses, and heavy equipment, reducing pollution in communities while cutting fuel expenses. Another $3.9 million will help local governments streamline the permitting process for home solar projects, removing bureaucratic barriers that slow down installations.

The Ripple Effect

These programs build on Maryland's track record of energy relief. Over the past two years, the state has delivered $300 million in direct utility bill assistance to struggling families, including $200 million in rebates last year alone.

The timing matters. As electricity costs climb nationwide, Maryland is giving residents tools to generate their own power rather than just paying more each month. Energy efficient upgrades and solar panels don't just help today. They cut costs for years to come.

When families control their own energy supply, they escape the volatility of utility rate increases. That financial breathing room ripples through entire communities, freeing up household budgets for groceries, healthcare, and savings.

Applications for all five programs are now available on the Maryland Energy Administration website, with additional programs expected to launch this fall.
