McLaren Breaks Mercedes' Perfect Season with Miami 1-2 Win

Formula 1's 2026 season just got a whole lot more interesting thanks to McLaren's breakthrough performance at the Miami Grand Prix.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri gave McLaren a perfect 1-2 finish in Saturday's sprint race, ending Mercedes' flawless start to the season. The German team had swept every podium spot across the first three grand prix races and China's sprint, but their dominance finally cracked under the Miami sun.

"It was a good race, nice to be back on the top stair even if it was a sprint," said Norris, who started from pole position. "It was hot out there, it was sweaty. I was trying to find that balance of pushing but also staying relaxed and not making mistakes."

The shift in power came after a five-week break caused by race cancellations in the Middle East. McLaren used that time wisely, bringing major upgrades to their cars that clearly closed the gap on Mercedes.

Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium in third for Ferrari, while Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli finished fourth and sixth respectively. Antonelli, who leads the championship standings after winning in China and Japan, dropped from fifth to sixth after receiving a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits.

The Bright Side

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the new competition with grace and realism. "This season is going to be a pure development race and whoever brings a few tenths before their competitors will gain an advantage," he said.

That's exactly what makes this shift so exciting for fans. After watching Mercedes dominate the season's opening, the championship battle is now wide open with multiple teams showing winning pace.

McLaren's resurgence is particularly sweet for the reigning world champion team, which has been working hard to return to the front of the pack. Norris won the same Miami sprint race last year, proving the team's upgrades have put them back where they belong.

Max Verstappen finished fifth for Red Bull, while seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton placed seventh for Ferrari after an early incident that saw him ordered to give back a position to Verstappen.

The real test comes Sunday with the full Miami Grand Prix, where teams will battle for bigger points and bragging rights around the Hard Rock Stadium circuit.
