Melatonin Cuts Chronic Pain as Much as Opioids in Study

🤯 Mind Blown

A supplement already sitting in millions of medicine cabinets might work as well as prescription painkillers for chronic pain. University of Sydney researchers found melatonin reduced pain by the same amount as opioids and NSAIDs in over 2,000 patients.

A sleep supplement you can buy at any drugstore might ease chronic pain as effectively as prescription medications, according to groundbreaking research from Australia.

Scientists at The University of Sydney analyzed 23 studies involving 2,028 adults suffering from conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic back pain. Those who took melatonin reported their pain dropped by about 10 points on a 100-point scale. That's the same relief people get from opioids, NSAIDs, and acetaminophen.

"Melatonin is already in people's homes, it's inexpensive, and we know it's safe," says lead researcher Kangchao Wu. "What's exciting is that melatonin may also help manage chronic pain, opening the door to reducing reliance on medications that come with more risks."

The doses that worked best ranged from 3 to 10 milligrams per day, typically taken within an hour of bedtime. For muscle and joint pain, 3 mg daily was most common. Post-surgery patients seemed to benefit most from 5 to 6 mg daily.

The Bright Side

Beyond pain relief, melatonin tackles a second problem that plagues chronic pain patients: terrible sleep. Poor sleep makes pain worse, and pain ruins sleep. This supplement appears to break that vicious cycle without the addiction risks or side effects of opioid medications.

The timing couldn't be better. Millions struggle with chronic pain, and many current treatments carry serious risks including addiction, organ damage, and overdose deaths. A safer option that's already proven safe for three months of continuous use could transform how doctors and patients approach pain management.

The researchers stress that melatonin shouldn't replace prescribed medications without talking to a doctor first. Instead, it works best as an add-on treatment, especially for people who also battle insomnia alongside their pain. Professor Paulo Ferreira, who directs the university's Musculoskeletal Research Hub, sees this as taking something familiar and applying it to solve a problem affecting billions worldwide.

More research is needed to understand exactly how melatonin eases pain beyond improving sleep quality, and which specific conditions respond best to which doses.

For now, this safe supplement already in 100 million homes worldwide just got a lot more interesting.
