Melbourne Airport Gets Australia's Largest EV Charging Hub

Australia is getting its largest airport EV charging hub, and it's solving a real problem for the 34,000 drivers passing through Melbourne Airport every day.

bp pulse broke ground on a 24-bay charging station at Melbourne Airport that will open in 2026. The facility will feature both 150 kW and 300 kW fast chargers, making it possible to top up quickly between flights or during rideshare shifts.

The location matters. Melbourne Airport sits at a busy crossroads where travelers, fleet vehicles, and rideshare drivers all converge. Until now, EV drivers in the area had limited charging options, especially for quick turnarounds.

The hub will include two accessible bays and drive-through lanes designed for larger vehicles. Basic amenities like bathrooms and weather protection complete the package, acknowledging that even fast charging takes a few minutes.

Rideshare drivers get an added bonus. Uber drivers who've made the switch to electric vehicles will access special discounted rates at the hub, making the transition to zero-emission driving more affordable.

The project sits at the corner of Airport Drive and Francis Briggs Road within the airport precinct. That puts it within easy reach of both airport traffic and the surrounding community.

The Ripple Effect

Here's what makes this project stand out: Melbourne Airport will power the entire hub with 100% renewable electricity from its two onsite solar farms. Chief of ground transport, property and retail Jai McDermott emphasized the pride in pairing Australia's first airport-scale charging hub with clean energy.

The renewable power source means every charge genuinely reduces emissions rather than just shifting them elsewhere. As more drivers go electric, the infrastructure needs to keep pace, and solar-powered charging stations show how airports can support that transition.

The timing aligns with a broader charging infrastructure boom. An impressive number of DC fast chargers came online in 2025, building the network that makes electric vehicle ownership practical for more Australians.
