New Mexico Hits 80% Clean Energy With Lowest US Power Bills

While most states watch their electricity bills climb higher each year, New Mexico pulled off something remarkable: cleaner energy that costs less.

The Public Service Company of New Mexico now delivers 80% carbon-free electricity after a whirlwind transformation that began in 2021. Back then, coal and gas powered nearly 80% of the grid.

Today, solar panels power air conditioners during scorching afternoons. Batteries store sunshine for evening use. Wind turbines spin through the night. All of it happened in five years.

The numbers tell an even better story. Nationwide, residential electricity prices jumped 32% from 2021 to 2026. In New Mexico? Just 7%. Residents now pay 14 cents per kilowatt-hour compared to the national average of 18 cents.

"We've got to be part of solving the problem," said Laurie Williams, who leads planning at PNM. She's watched the company's mindset shift over her 34 years there as climate science became clearer.

The 2019 Energy Transition Act set ambitious targets: 50% renewable energy by 2030, 100% zero-carbon by 2045. PNM plans to hit that final goal five years early.

The law also protected workers. When the San Juan coal plant closed in 2022, a retraining fund kicked in. So far, 2,800 workers have learned new skills, beating the 2,000-worker goal.

Native American communities near closed plants got automatic seats on funding committees. Money flowed to sustainable agriculture, solar projects, and direct payments to displaced workers.

Small-scale solar installations more than doubled since 2020. Over 13,000 PNM customers now have rooftop panels. Another 16 community solar farms let people buy shares without installing anything at home.

The Ripple Effect

What makes New Mexico special isn't just the solar panels. It's the unsexy stuff that usually bogs down clean energy everywhere else.

The state streamlined how new solar and wind projects connect to the grid. Applications get reviewed quickly. Fees stay low. Data stays transparent. New Mexico earned the only "A" grade nationwide for interconnection policies.

"The moral of the renewables story is transmission," Williams explained. Without fast, reliable connections between all the pieces, renewables can't scale.

Other states watch solar projects sit in multiyear waiting lines. New Mexico figured out how to plug them in fast.

Williams calls it "the biggest math problem on the planet." Her state is showing it's solvable. The economy is diversifying beyond oil and gas. Jobs are growing in renewable sectors. And residents are saving money every month.

Clean air and cheaper bills used to sound like a fantasy. New Mexico made it Tuesday.
